Visa & Migration
International Student Support Office
There are basic requirements and rules to the process of receiving your visa and arriving in Rostov-on-Don
Passport Requirements
Before applying for a visa, ensure your passport meets the following criteria:
- It must be valid for at least 1.5 years from your intended date of arrival in Russia for long-term study.
- It must be in good condition, with no damage, torn, or missing pages.
- It must have at least two blank pages designated for visas.
Receiving the Invitation Letter
Once you are officially admitted to a program at DSTU, the university will issue an official invitation letter required for your visa application.
- This process typically takes 3 to 20 working days, depending on your citizenship and the type of visa.
- We will send you a scanned copy of the invitation by email. The original document will be sent by courier service (e.g., DHL) if required by the Russian consulate in your country.
Applying for Your Student Visa
With the invitation letter, you can apply for a student visa at the Russian Consulate or Visa Center in your home country.
Required documents typically include:
- A completed Russian visa application form.
- Your original passport (meeting the requirements above).
- One recent standard photograph (3.5x4.5 cm).
- The original or copy of the invitation letter from DSTU.
- Payment of the visa fee (cost varies by country and processing time).
- Additional for student visas: A valid HIV-negative certificate (valid for 3 months) and proof of health insurance.
NB! Consular officers have the right to request additional documents, such as bank statements. Processing times can range from 4 to 20 working days, with expedited service available for an extra fee.
Upon Arrival in Russia: Migration Registration
After you enter Russia, you must complete migration registration.
- Migration Card: You will receive this card upon entry at the border. Keep it safe with your passport.
- University Registration: Within 7 business days of your arrival, DSTU will register you at your place of residence (university dormitory or private apartment). This is a mandatory procedure for legal stay.
Health Insurance
Having valid health insurance is mandatory for migration registration and your safety.
You can use an international insurance policy if it explicitly covers Russia.
If you do not have one, you can purchase a policy upon arrival or through DSTU's partner providers.
Important Note on Visa Details
When you receive your visa, carefully check:
- The spelling of your name must exactly match your passport.
- The purpose of your trip must be "Study". Tourist visas cannot be used for enrollment and will prevent you from obtaining legal registration.
Can I Bring My Family?
The opportunity for family members (spouse, children) to accompany you is generally available for long-term students and academic staff. This process requires additional documentation and preparation. Please contact the International Student Support Office at spu-10.8@donstu.ru well in advance to inquire about the specific requirements.
