Specialists in veterinary dentistry will be trained in Russia
Don State Technical University will be the first one in Russia to train specialists in veterinary dentistry. In partnership with the educational veterinary center "Dentalvet" DGTU opens the corporate department department of "Veterinary dentistry and maxillofacial surgery." Training of the specialists will take place at PhD cycle, after obtaining the basic degree in veterinary medicine, and as a part of continuing professional education.
Enrollment in the new study program in the graduate cycle and in programs of continuing professional education starts the next academic year. The subject of veterinary dentistry will be included in the study program for students of 4-5 courses studying in the "Veterinary" field. Postgraduate training will be led by the Dean of the Faculty of Bioengineering and Veterinary Medicine Professor Aleksey Ermakov, the Specialist degree will include Veterinary Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which will be delivered by the chief medical officer of the Veterinary Training Center Dentalvet acting Head of the Department of Veterinary Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery Anna Spirina.
“The creation of the Department of Veterinary Dentistry is a logical continuation of the training of specialists in the field of veterinary medicine, taking into account the specializations demanded by employers and modern conditions for the provision of paid veterinary services,” said Alexey Ermakov. - In the context of rapid technological development, practical approaches to solving applied problems are regularly changing. Constantly modernizing processes and their adjustment allow students to keep up with the development of theory and practice, to take part in the formation of the fundamentals of such an important area as veterinary dentistry.
According to Professor Alexei Ermakov, the help of veterinarians is required for all types of animals. According to statistics, 90% of animals older than three years and 100% after five years have dental problems.
The corporate department will be located in Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. Part of the practical classes is planned to be held on the basis of Dentalvet. The veterinary center has modern dental complexes and equipment, tools for all dental procedures in pets, including complex maxillofacial operations.
“The creation of the Department of Veterinary Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery will raise the level of young veterinary specialists for high-quality veterinary care for animals in the city, including circus and zoo,” says Anna Spirina. “It will also help to ensure a high-tech level for scientific and practical activities in the field of veterinary dentistry and related specializations, to attract the university research staff for the development and coordination of standards of good veterinary practice with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Agriculture.
As part of continuing professional education, the training of the first group of veterinarians who want to specialize in veterinary dentistry will be held in the fall of 2020 at the South Russian International Veterinary Congress.

The Dentalvet Veterinary Training Center was established in July 2012 to organize and conduct educational events in the field of veterinary dentistry and related specializations necessary to ensure the high professionalism and effectiveness of the veterinarian-dentist, as well as anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology and radiation diagnostics.
